Protecting Vulnerable Communities
Somalia faces a multitude of complex protection risks, impacting diverse vulnerable groups such as minority-affiliated communities, women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. At Jubaland Mine Action Network (JUMAN), we are dedicated to addressing these challenges through a comprehensive range of initiatives:
Child Protection: Children in Somalia are disproportionately affected by violence, exploitation, and the threat of recruitment into armed groups. JUMAN implements robust child protection measures, including psychosocial support, access to education, and explosive ordnance risk education to mitigate dangers posed by mines and unexploded ordnance.
Gender-Based Violence (GBV): GBV remains pervasive in Somalia, exacerbated by factors like conflict, displacement, and social norms. JUMAN conducts critical interventions to support survivors of GBV, including provision of essential services, awareness campaigns, and advocacy for improved infrastructure and security in vulnerable communities.
Explosive Hazards: The presence of mines and explosive remnants of war poses severe risks to civilian populations, particularly children who often account for the majority of casualties. JUMAN leads humanitarian mine action efforts, focusing on clearance operations, risk education, and surveys to identify and mitigate explosive hazards in affected areas.
Nutrition and Livelihood Support: JUMAN addresses food insecurity and malnutrition through targeted interventions, including food assistance, livelihood support for agro-pastoral communities, and promoting access to nutritious diets through food-based approaches and behavior change communication.
Health and Well-being: Amidst challenging circumstances including reduced health funding and frequent disease outbreaks, JUMAN supports health facilities with humanitarian aid and collaborates with health cluster partners to ensure continuity of essential health services, particularly maternal and neonatal care, during crises.
Environmental Resilience: Recognizing Somalia’s vulnerability to climate change and environmental degradation, JUMAN engages in climate adaptation strategies, sustainable agriculture, and ecosystem restoration initiatives to enhance community resilience and mitigate environmental impacts on livelihoods.
Fisheries and Blue Economy: JUMAN promotes sustainable fisheries management and the development of the blue economy, advocating for policies that protect marine ecosystems while supporting economic growth and food security through responsible use of ocean resources.
Through active participation in national and regional clusters, JUMAN advocates for the rights and well-being of vulnerable populations, contributing to coordinated efforts in protection, nutrition, health, livelihoods, and education. Our partnerships with reputable organizations and donors enable us to implement diverse projects aimed at improving safety, resilience, and sustainable development in Somalia.
